Architectural bookshop threatening to close doors

The Globe and Mail

Toronto's architectural bookstore, Ballenford Books, is threatening to close and trying to liquidate its stock. In a letter to customers and supporters, owner Susan Delean blames her troubles on big-box retailing in the book industry, university programs buying their books from large distributors in the United States and the slowness of Canadian publishers to lower prices as the dollar reached par with the American dollar. "Over the past few years, it has become ever more clear that Ballenford Books is no longer a viable business...," she wrote. "I cannot express how devastating this is for me personally and for my family."
