A Winnipeg city councillor fears for the future of one of what she calls "one of the most important heritage buildings in Osborne Village." The owners of the First Church of Christian Science, at 511 River Avenue, applied for a demolition permit for the building, which triggered an evaluation by the city's historic buildings committee. But the committee recommended that the building be listed as a "grade II heritage building," which would mean the owner would not be allowed to demolish it. Both the city's property and development committee and city council must approve the heritage designation; the committee will consider the matter at a public hearing on March 25. Jenny Gerbasi, chair of the city's heritage committee, told CBC News she does not want to see Osborne Village lose its historic character.
