Carbon-neutral building sets a standard

The Globe and Mail

As an award-winning leader in green design, it's no surprise that Vancouver architect Peter Busby is planning North America's first carbon-neutral office tower. The proposed 23-storey, energy-efficient building will be joined to GM Place, enabling office workers to walk from its lobby through the downtown Vancouver hockey arena's concourse. But the connection will be much more symbiotic - it is envisaged that GM Place will enjoy spinoff energy benefits from the office building that, in turn, will help make the tower carbon neutral. The $225-million building is being designed to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification, which may be old-hat for Mr. Busby, who designed the first such designated new building in Canada in 2003. But in the GM Place office tower, he will be going well beyond current sustainability standards.
