Style was a reaction to cold age of industry

Toronto Star

The Arts and Crafts style originated in the 1880s as a reaction to the dehumanizing aspects of the Industrial Revolution, and was led by English poet, author, designer and social reformer William Morris. Soon it found expression in the U.S. with architect and designer Gustav Stickley, not only in his famous furniture, but also in a magazine called The Craftsman, which he published from 1901 to 1916. It also served as inspiration for Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie School. English architect Eden Smith, who established an architecture firm in Toronto in the late 1800s, was largely responsible for the housing form in Canada.
