Visions of the final four

National Post

Open firepits, elevated waterways, moveable gardens and hidden fountains are among the ideas being proposed to revitalize Nathan Phillips Square. Toronto last night unveiled the four finalists in a design competition aimed at reinvigorating and beautifying the public space in front of City Hall. Forty-eight teams had submitted designs to the competition, including entries from Chile, China, Finland, Germany and Iran. A six-member jury then selected the finalists in December. Three of the short-listed teams come from Toronto while the fourth, Rogers Marvel Architects, is based in New York. The winning team will be announced on March 8. City councillors in 2005 approved spending $16-million on the project, with hopes an additional $24-million can be solicited from private donors.
