Metropolis, the much-delayed retail/entertainment complex, is at last looming ominously over Yonge Dundas Square. Though unfinished, it already seems too large for the intersection. In one memorable illustration, done five or six years ago, an artist painted Metropolis as a lurid pre-apocalyptic fantasy. The city appears lit up by some distant conflagration. Adding to the sense of urgency are the searchlights that ply the cloudless sky, perhaps in anticipation of an air attack. The tone is one of alarm, of imminent danger. If nothing else, it captures the viewer's attention, though not entirely in a positive way.
