Money-driven burg sacrifices creativity

Toronto Star

Despite the frantic rearguard action launched last week by Mayor David Miller, the battle of the Queen Street Triangle is lost. Thanks to the Ontario Municipal Board and city inaction, it's all over but the gnashing of teeth. The developers are now free to erect their condos and in so doing destroy the very things that made the area so appealing to them in the first place. Not that the developers see it that way; in a nod to the "artistic" spirit of the neighbourhood, in a touching display of sensitivity, one decided to name his (architecturally dismal) project the Bohemian Embassy. This was done without apparent irony, and is a sign of how bad the situation is. But the sad truth is that before the Triangle, there was Liberty Village and Queen St. W., and before that Yorkville, and before that... well, you get the idea. The battles were the same and so were the outcomes.
