Learn a little about architecture

National Post

I'm sure you already have too many resolutions for 2007. In case you haven't, here are three modest proposals to consider about design: The first sounds presumptuous -- forgive me -- and, of course, it's not universally applicable, but how about learning something about architecture in 2007? Flipping through the glossy pages of style magazines does not make you well informed about design. Many people hold strong views about architecture or interior design, yet essentially know nothing. This is particularly evident among younger people, who have considerably more self-confidence than education. Their lack of sophistication has them wanting to mindlessly replicate a space they saw in the latest issue of Wallpaper* (for their equally un-savvy parents, it was a room in Architectural Digest).
