History takes toll on aging fire hall

Toronto Star

Hear about the holdup at the Yorkville Fire Hall? Luckily, the two big struts involved in it never got away from the building. There are few structures in Toronto older than the fire hall, built in 1876 on Yorkville Ave., just west of Yonge St., and renovated in 1974, after it was designated by the Toronto Historical Board. It still bears the Village of Yorkville's coat of arms over a set of doors. It also remains a working fire hall, with its pumper trucks often dispatched to downtown calls. It stands as a testament to the durability and usefulness of 19th-century architecture, when shown some tender loving care.
