Toronto Star

Vertical or horizontal? Urban or suburban? More than ever, this is the choice, whether to grow up or grow out. While the debate rages in Toronto, other cities have long since made their decision. Vancouver, Singapore and Hong Kong are just a few of the places where highrise living has become the norm. Unlike Toronto, these cities have nowhere to go but up. Constrained by borders and geography, they don't enjoy the luxury of endless space. That means they are forced to be smart, something Ontarians talk about a lot, but rarely manage.
