The winner of an international competition to improve public access to Toronto's central waterfront, announced yesterday, is a Dutch-led consortium lauded for a design that is "bold, beautiful and buildable." West 8, an urban design and architecture firm based in Rotterdam, with several partners that include Toronto-based du Toit Allsopp Hiller and Diamond and Schmitt Architects, got the nod from a high-profile jury appointed by the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp. The proposed design calls for new boardwalks, bridges and ramps to create a continuous water's edge promenade, lined by a double row of large native trees, along a three-kilometre stretch between Bathurst and Parliament Streets.
