Contemporary architecture in Montreal matters for the spaces in between, in working-class neighbourhoods, in the outskirts -- wherever it can. That UNESCO has designated Montreal as a City of Design is a lovely show of civic boosterism -- but it does little to deepen the city's culture of architecture. Buildings do. Exhibitions do. So do books, and regular, responsible commentary by the media.
