The readers have let their fingers do the talking, now they want to use their feet to do the walking. Responding in the hundreds to the "What If?" stories in last Sunday's Star, people told us loud and clear: Toronto must be greened; transit must be improved; and, above all, the city must be returned to pedestrians. In the first of a three-part series, we will look at each of these complaints, beginning with the last one on the list. For the past half-century, civic politicians and their bureaucratic enablers have done enormous damage to Toronto in their efforts to hand it over to the automobile. Streets have been widened, pavements narrowed, traffic lights installed on sidewalks... The list of injuries and indignities goes on and on.
