There are places where tall buildings don't belong; Toronto isn't one of them. Okay, there are areas of the city, many of them, where towers don't belong, but make no mistake about it; Toronto's future is highrise. Driven by economics, technology and, of course, the good old edifice complex, height is right. Despite the fear and loathing, this doesn't signal the end of the world as we know it. The contemporary tower has moved beyond the corporate imperative. Indeed, the 21st-century skyscraper is more likely to be residential than commercial, with all that implies.
