It's the Wednesday before the Metro Home Show opens and Lloyd Alter is on a tight schedule. But when I ask him to talk prefabricated housing, he gladly shoehorns an hour into his schedule. Mr. Alter, an architect who works with Royal Homes Ltd. -- a Wingham, Ont., company that employs 250 people -- is Toronto's prefab guru, the go-to guy when the media wants an expert opinion. Since Mr. Alter introduced Royal's "Q series" (designed by Toronto-based Kohn Shnier Architects) in 2004, and, more recently, the larger "M series" (his own design), and decided to represent San Francisco architect Michelle Kaufmann's "Glidehouse," there has been tons of excitement and press.
