The inaugural Ottawa Urban Design Awards showed good design can happen even on a modest budget. "It's interesting that some winners were not just expensive and beautiful condo developments but a seniors' home and a co-op building -- places that make a difference to everyday living," said Amy Falkner, manager of the City of Ottawa awards program. "Good urban design is occurring irrespective of big budgets," she said. "Those two could have been institutional, adequate and uninteresting projects that didn't contribute much." With 27 good submissions, Ms. Falkner said the biennial program is off to a good start.
