The challenge of fulfilling a vision

The Ottawa Citizen

To describe their vision for CFB Rockcliffe, the executives of Canada Lands Company show a PowerPoint presentation titled "A New Community with Traditional Style." Images of leafy streets, houses with porches, and landscaped parks appear on the screen. "In Ottawa, think of Manor Park, Rockcliffe, the Glebe, Westboro, Rideau Gardens," says the text. "Trees -- lots of them. Narrow streets. Mix of housing types. Lots of parks, pathways. Garages and parking lots are out of sight. Prominent civic buildings. Not suburban in design." Aside from drawing on established neighbourhoods in Ottawa, examples come from recent New Urbanism developments in Oakville, Markham, San Jose, California, and Kentlands, Maryland.
