On balance, I prefer Jack Diamond's vision of the waterfront to that of Boston's Fred Koetter, the winner of an international competition to revitalize 10.5 hectares between Jarvis and Sherbourne. In duelling presentations yesterday to the board of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation that resulted in the board sticking with Koetter's vision, Diamond was more articulate, had better pictures, offered what seems like a more realistic view of the limited commercial viability of the neighbourhood, and worried appropriately about inoculating the area against the ravages of winter and wide-open spaces. But the renowned Toronto architect's insertion into the process yesterday — at the behest and urging of the Toronto Economic Development Corporation — is mischief-making that our mayor should have stopped, not encouraged.
