The Winning Design
A few months ago, Randall Stout had never been to Edmonton or heard of its small art gallery, which got its humble start at a downtown hotel 81 years ago. Now, the Los Angeles-based architect hopes his bold and curvy redesign of the Edmonton Art Gallery will attract the world to its doors. He was tapped yesterday by gallery officials and a seven-member jury as the winner of a hotly contested international competition to transform the gallery, beating out three others, including Will Alsop of London, England, and Arthur Erickson of Vancouver. The gallery also announced plans to change its name to the Art Gallery of Alberta, in honour of a $15-million donation from the provincial government to the $48-million project.
