The installation of barrier-free access -- including an elevator -- at Hart House has received an award of excellence from Heritage Toronto this week in recognition of craftsmanship and architectural conservation. The project was the unanimous choice of the jury for its sensitive design solution. “The quality of life of all Torontonians is enriched through the appreciation and awareness of our heritage,” said Mayor David Miller in applauding the Heritage Toronto Awards. Hart House, the centre for student life on the St. George campus, was designed by Sproatt and Rolph in 1911. Construction began before the First World War but the building was not completed until 1919. The distinctive Gothic style presented a number of challenges to creating contemporary barrier-free access. The award-winning project was done in two phases by U of T’s in-house design department.
