The national building code, to be released in September, will be simpler and more innovation-friendly for developers and property owners who are in pursuit of permits to build or renovate all classes of buildings across Canada, those in the industry believe. The National Building Code of Canada, which is designed to ensure that buildings are structurally sound, fire safe, free of health hazards, and accessible, forms the model for each province's building codes. The new code allows architects and engineers to suggest alternatives to meeting objectives described in their building permit applications, rather than rigidly defining materials and specifications, as previous versions did.
