Today's new houses often lack the architectural details or embellishments frequently found inside older homes. So it is not unusual for a new homeowner to face a blank canvas on move-in day. Toronto designer David MacPhee sees this as a huge opportunity to add some character to that new home. MacPhee has spent the past few years doing a television show on the W Network called Decorating Challenge. "Time and time again, we went into houses and they were void of any kind of décor details. It's different when you buy a vintage house; even from the 1950s, it has its mark on it. Today's new homes require homeowners to add to the builder's package and provide their own distinctive touches." The good news is that, with all the decorating shows, magazines and home-improvement stores, you can find many ideas and tips to transform your blank canvas.
