Good design starts at home

It's a curious fact of life that so few architects feel at home designing houses. The truth is that the connection between architecture and residential building is slim. There are exceptions, of course: condos, social housing and the luxury digs of the very rich. But for the middle class, architecture has relatively little to do with it, especially for those unfortunates who live in the suburbs, where design is at best a marketing exercise. So it comes as a pleasant surprise to see "Living Spaces: 21 Contemporary Canadian Homes," on display until tomorrow at the York Quay Gallery (235 Queens Quay W.).
