If the great universities of the world are defined as much by their architecture as their academic excellence, then the University of British Columbia is putting a fresh, green face forward. An eco-friendly design by Santa Monica's Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners and Vancouver's Hughes Condon Marler: Architects has won the school's University Boulevard Architectural Competition. The project, which will give UBC's somewhat scattered campus a new entranceway and cohesive social centre, is the first such venture in Vancouver since 1991.
