The former head office of Canadian National Railways, located in the soon-to-be-developed West Don Lands, has been added to the city's list of heritage properties. The property at 425 Cherry St. was built in 1923, following the federal government's amalgamation of five defunct railway companies into Canadian National. The building also housed CN Police at one time and was used by the rail giant until 1970. The area surrounding the red brick structure, on the northeast corner of Front St. E. and Cherry St., has been associated with railways since the turn of the 20th century, when the defunct Grand Trunk Railway built freight yards there.
