The Allan Wall: Wellesley and Sherbourne Streets

The Globe and Mail

Today, Wellesley and Sherbourne is an intersection in transition as a new medical centre rises near the aging towers of St. James Town. But a Victorian sandstone wall at the northwest corner capped with elaborate wrought iron suggests that the area has already seen a few changes. Half-shadowed by construction hoardings, the wall is almost comically out of place. And no wonder -- it's the last trace of a country estate that once stood here, and the heart of a plan that was to see the area turned into a neighbourhood of genteel garden estates.
