Don't like concrete barriers keeping you from Portage and Main? Would you prefer ornamental wrought iron fences? That's one possibility as city hall ponders the future of the windy corner and its concrete barricades that direct foot traffic to the underground Lombard Concourse and Winnipeg Square. "At a minimum I'd think we might be able to have the design looked at," city planning and property director Harry Finnigan said. "Instead of the concrete barriers, maybe we could use some ornamental, nice, attractive wrought-iron fence with flowers or something. There are other ways to have the barricades controlling the pedestrian crossing while being different from what's there now." David Asper of media giant CanWest Global Communications Corp. wants to make the junction of Portage Avenue and Main Street more friendly to the eyes and to pedestrians, and is keeping an open mind on ways to do it.
