Damned vociferously and lavishly praised when it opened in 2000, the University of Toronto's controversial Graduate House suddenly popped back into the headlines last week with the announcement that Thom Mayne, the student residence's lead designer, had been awarded the highly prestigious Pritzker Prize for architecture. I don't think the superstar phenomenon is, in general, a good thing for art (outside Hollywood, anyway). But we can hope that winning the Pritzker keeps Mr. Mayne in the news long enough to revive the heated chat about Graduate House, and perhaps even inspire some fresh debate about Toronto's main-street residential architecture in general.
