Philip Johnson, who died last week at the age of 98, has left an imprint on the culture of architecture remarkable for its influence and irreverence. He was the first and possibly the only self-proclaimed "propagandistic" curator who handed out solo and group exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art to those worthy of his attention. His unabashed interest in style led him to change colours like a chameleon, provoking classics of modernism such as his 1949 Glass House as well as hideous neo-Gothic skyscrapers.
