I recently moved into a wonderful contemporary house: It has concrete floors, 12-foot ceilings, thin metal-frame windows that flood the spaces with light, and beautiful, minimalist detailing throughout. As much as I like the house, furnishing the space hasn't been easy -- apparently not an uncommon challenge for owners of modern homes. But this is an unexpected issue for me, considering I was the architect on the project. If you have built a modern house and find your possessions don't suit it, you will start to hate modern. While some like the idea of starting completely fresh -- new house, new furniture, new art -- most don't bargain on tossing out everything they own. One of the reasons we don't see more contemporary-style houses built, let alone subdivisions of them, is a fear that they don't accommodate people -- and their stuff -- very well.
