Our modernist heritage is being rapidly obliterated

The Globe and Mail

Last week, the crack of doom sounded for the Inn on the Park. Designed by Peter Dickinson and opened in 1963 (two years after the architect's death at age 35), the hotel at Leslie Street and Eglinton Avenue gave Hogtown a good jolt of modernist swank. The place, which has long been in physical and economic decline, is now slated to close its doors forever in January. The wreckers will almost certainly move in shortly thereafter, and obliterate yet another noteworthy piece of classic Toronto modernism. The last few years have been cruel to our town's mid-century modern structures. James A. Murray's chic, petite Anglo Canada Insurance Company Building was demolished in 1997 after standing on St. Clair Avenue West for 43 years.
