Ernie Smith, whose architectural vision helped shape Winnipeg's skyline in the 1960s and 70s, has died at age 84. Smith co-founded Smith-Carter Architects in 1947 with Dennis Carter. He designed the Centennial Concert Hall, the Richardson Building, and the Pan Am Pool. The company went on to open offices in Toronto and Vancouver, but always kept its headquarters in Winnipeg. "He did believe in Winnipeg, and I think we did lose a very important person in the history and development of our city, in terms of the seminal projects that mark our skyline," says Scott Stirton, current CEO of Smith-Carter.
