Brampton's historic Alderlea 'Italianate' villa to be restored

Toronto Star

Once referred to as the "finest house in Peel County," Brampton's historic Alderlea villa will be restored and reunited with its Gage Park front yard to function as a cultural events centre. Alderlea was built between 1865 and 1867 for Kenneth Chisholm, one of Brampton's leading citizens and member of provincial parliament (1872-1892). This grand Italianate-style villa is believed to have been designed by Toronto architect William Kaufman, who also designed the Peel County Courthouse across the street in 1865. Located in the downtown core of Brampton, the house is set on terraced lands overlooking Gage Park, the former front lawn of Alderlea. The city acquired the front lawn in 1903 as Brampton's first municipal park.
