Urban advocate speaks his mind

Toronto Star

When Glen Murray resigned as mayor of Winnipeg earlier this year, he expected to end up in Ottawa as a Liberal MP and cabinet minister. Instead, he lost the election and came to Toronto. And not surprisingly, perhaps, the man who has become the unofficial spokesperson for urban Canada couldn't be happier. "I love Toronto," Murray, 47, enthuses. "I've been one of its biggest champions for years. Its success is the success of Canada. Toronto is the only Canadian city that has the capacity to be a world-leading centre; it has the cultural depth and the economic capacity." But as Murray also points out, like every city in Canada, Toronto faces the overwhelming problem of an antiquated legislative framework that leaves urban centres at the mercy of the provinces.
