Union Station's redevelopment is finally getting back on the rails. The project had been mired in controversy over the selection of a private sector operator, but that ended in May when city council voted to sign on Union Pearson Group to upgrade the city-owned landmark in exchange for a lease of up to 100 years. Union Pearson wants to add 130,000 square feet of new retail space and a boutique hotel or office complex. It expects to begin work next year. Earlier, the consortium had been forced to make concessions of $9.1 million on the $130 million project. As for concerns over a second vote and discarded scoring sheets during the selection process, provincial integrity commissioner Mr. Justice Coulter Osborne was called in and found the process was imperfect, but fair.
