A tight site, a historic building and an aggressive expansion program have erupted into a heritage squabble over the Royal Conservatory of Music's plans to redevelop one of the few remaining examples of high Victorian architecture in Toronto. At risk is the moulded brick and stone staircase tower, chimney and attached south pavilion that form the back portion of McMaster Hall, a historically designated building that has been home to the RCM since the early 1960s. On one side are Larry Richards, professor and former dean of architecture at the University of Toronto, and Allan Gotlieb, former Canadian ambassador to the United States -- both members of the Ontario Heritage Foundation, the province's lead heritage agency.
