Vancouver joining push for rooftop oases among cityscape canyons

The Globe and Mail

When the Vancouver convention centre spreads its sails in 2008 with a $500-million expansion, it will be sporting a 2.4-hectare roof alive with flowers and grasses. Destined to be the largest green roof in Canada, it will cover the equivalent of four city blocks. The green roof was consistent with the design goals for the building, says Russ Anthony, president and project director for the expansion.Because of the location -- along the Coal Harbour Shoreline and immediately west of the existing convention centre at Canada Place -- it was important that the building not overwhelm the waterfront, he says. As well, it should complement the necklace of open spaces extending to Stanley Park and not take away from the Canada Place sails, which have become synonymous with Vancouver around the world.
