If we don't get money, 'I guess we'll stay ugly'

The Globe and Mail

When it comes to Toronto's future, urban planner Joe Berridge does not mince words. "Toronto is getting less beautiful at a time when most other cities are getting more beautiful," he says. "That is very distressing." A founding partner of Toronto-based Urban Strategies Inc., Mr. Berridge now divides his time between here and New York (World Financial Center), London (Canary Wharf) and Manchester (downtown renewal), giving him an invaluable reference point for his work here (including Toronto's waterfront task force). Last Wednesday, he delivered a cri de coeur to a seminar on "building beauty" put on by the Toronto Society of Architects. "The truth is that Toronto is not a beautiful city because we haven't yet wanted it to be," he told the audience of about 100 planners, architects and consultants.
