With the appearance of the Woodsworth College residence, the intersection of Bloor St. W. and St. George St. has finally turned the corner. The 17-storey building, designed by Peter Clewes and Adrian di Castri of architectsAlliance, is one of the finest residential towers in Toronto. Though it has been a landmark since it started to take shape last winter, the new structure doesn't overpower the site or cry out for attention. Indeed, it is as respectful a highrise as we have in this city, deferential to its neighbours and the streets on which it's located. Essentially two buildings in one, the Woodsworth complex consists of a 13-storey tower that sits atop a four-storey podium. The lower section, which is finished in yellowy-beige brick, addresses the sidewalk with a series of glazed walls. The upper portion, by contrast, is clad in glass, coloured and transparent, arranged in a pattern reminiscent perhaps of the 1950s and `60s. This slightly retro feel has been enhanced by the play of ovoid shapes and rectangular forms, organic and geometric.
