Two Toronto architectural firms have received top kudos for their modernist house designs. Shim-Sutcliffe Architects and Ian MacDonald Architect Inc. won the Governor-General's Medals in Architecture, which they will receive in a ceremony this fall at Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson's Ottawa residence. Shim-Sutcliffe won two medals, one for a Muskoka boathouse and the other for a residence in Don Mills. Ian MacDonald earned a medal for a compact country retreat in Erin Township, northwest of Toronto. "The Governor General's Medals in Architecture — past and future — chronicle Canada's architectural heritage as it is being created," says Bonnie Maples, president of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The institute administers the award program along with The Canada Council. Nine medals were awarded this year, five of them for houses, including the three in Ontario.
