Construction of the new Canadian War Museum, one of the largest projects to break ground in Ottawa in recent years, has pumped life into LeBreton Flats, a prime parcel of waterfront property that has been steeped in controversy since the 1960s. The 160-acre site, on the south bank of the Ottawa River, a five-minute drive west of downtown Ottawa, has been a hive of activity since 2002, when crews began decontaminating soil and excavating earth where the $136-million museum is to open next May. The museum, which is being relocated from outdated quarters on Sussex Drive, has kick-started development of LeBreton Flats. The property has sat vacant since it was expropriated by the federal government in 1962. All its buildings were razed the following year.
