Ontario to beef up protection of historic buildings

The Ontario government is giving Toronto and other cities across the province long-sought powers to save heritage buildings from the wrecker's ball. Yesterday, provincial Culture Minister Madeleine Meilleur announced changes to the Ontario Heritage Act that would give municipalities the right to stop -- not just delay as they can now -- the demolition of heritage sites. The legislation still gives property owners the right to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board.
