During his NHL playing days, Frank Mahovlich routinely brought Maple Leaf Gardens' crowds to their feet with his lumbering rushes and deft scoring touch. Now a Canadian senator, Mahovlich made a play last night to help keep the old building itself standing. "Everybody has to care about what we do with this beautiful building," the former Maple Leafs star told a public forum, called in support of preserving the Carlton St. arena. The forum at the St. Lawrence Centre drew more than 200 people. Prominent Toronto architect Jack Diamond said the Gardens represents an important piece of Canada's mythology and, as such, is a key part of this country's tenuous culture.
