Architect proposes $85M native centre on Victoria Island

The Ottawa Citizen

Internationally renowned architect Douglas Cardinal has pitched an $85-million development project for Victoria Island, including a curvy aboriginal centre complete with a museum, elders residence and restaurant that would carry the status of a reserve, with tax exemptions. Mr. Cardinal's concept design report, obtained by the Citizen through the Access to Information Act, also calls for the $7-million rehabilitation of the historic carbide mill that served as a summer home for squatters during the 1990s. Victoria Island is located in the Ottawa River between the Chaudiere Falls and the Parliament Buildings.
