Cedric Price as seen by Will Alsop

On Thursday 25 March at 7 pm, architect Will Alsop, known for his own new and audacious ideas, will give a first-hand view of British architect and thinker Cedric Price, for whom he worked in the 1970s, and who is a key figure in the CCA exhibition out of the box: price rossi stirling + matta-clark.

For more than 40 years, Cedric Price consistently excited, influenced, and provoked his peers. His projects and built work are notable for a radically technological and pragmatic approach. He built little, but without his Fun Palace (1961-1972) and Potteries Thinkbelt (1963-1966), much of late 20th-century architecture would be inconceivable - from Piano & Rogers's Centre Pompidou, in Paris (1971-1977) to the work of Rem Koolhaas today.

Will Alsop currently leads an architectural practice employing over 100 architects with offices in London and Rotterdam. His built work is notable for dynamic, soaring, and often brightly coloured forms. His Peckham Library, in London, won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2000, and the Sharp Centre for Design, a major addition to the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) is currently nearing completion in Toronto. Two important aspects of Alsop's approach to architectural design have been his strong interest in the visual arts (he is also a painter and sculptor) and his commitment to public consultation as part of the design process. After studies at the Architectural Association in London, culminating in a scholarship year at the British School in Rome, Alsop joined the office of Cedric Price in 1975 and he worked there for five years before opening his own firm in 1979. According to Alsop, "Working for him was like enrolling in a second course in architecture."

Admission to the lecture is free. However, since seating is limited, it is preferable to reserve with Carole Daneau at 514 939 7001 extension 1390 or cdaneau@cca.qc.ca.
