A new model for redevelopment is taking shape in downtown Toronto, and builders are eager to get a piece of the action. The project is the transformation of Regent Park, the 29-hectare parcel of land bounded by Parliament, Gerrard, River and Dundas Sts., which is now the site of 2,100 subsidized housing units. Over the next dozen or so years, the Toronto Community Housing Corp. will oversee a six-phase redevelopment of the site that will result in a new community with a total of 4,500 units, including 2,087 rent-geared-to-income units, 500 affordable ownership units for people with low incomes, as well as 2,500 market-value housing units.
