Toronto architect Tye Farrow is giving a vintage look to some new hospitals in Ontario by including wood as a major element in his designs. The initiative has the Canadian Wood Council, which represents manufacturers of wood products for construction, predicting a resurgence of wood in large-building design, despite building codes that discourage this. Mr. Farrow, 40, was after a warmer look than steel and concrete could provide when he designed the new $184-million, 63,000-square-metre Thunder Bay Regional Hospital, which is scheduled to open late this month.
