Frank Gehry — the architect even people who know nothing about architecture have heard of — flew back to his hometown on Monday and left again on Thursday. In those three days between his arrival and his departure, he was the centre of a media celebrity circus. Almost 75 years after he was born here, Toronto was giving him the star treatment. And thanks to him, the world is already starting to pay more attention to Toronto. Even he found the frenzy a tad excessive. By Wednesday afternoon, Gehry was conveying the impression that if he had to smile for one more photographer or deliver one more interview sound byte about his nostalgia for the old neighbourhood, his inner titanium might reach the cracking point.
