Frank Gehry yesterday gave his hometown a complex, subtle surprise. The $195 million reinvented Art Gallery of Ontario he unveiled will help put Toronto on the international cultural map. But his creation reveals some essential truths about this city only someone who grew up on its streets could know — that this is a place where solving problems and remembering where you came from counts for more than razzle-dazzle. The project is very personal to him, the 74-year-old Gehry explained to the throng in the AGO's Walker Court, which was waiting for the curtain to be drawn revealing the vision of the world's most celebrated living architect.
