Native son Gehry recalls boyhood

Toronto Star

In the old days, he wasn't called Frank Gehry. His name was Frank Goldberg — Frank Owen Goldberg, actually. Frank Goldberg's Toronto was the lively, colourful Jewish neighbourhood that had its centre on Spadina Avenue. "People think Frank Gehry fell out of the sky," the celebrated architect said the other day, speaking from his office in West Los Angeles. "I was around for an awfully long time before people started paying attention. And for a lot of years, I thought Toronto had forgotten me."
